This beautiful teardrop-shaped collection
of flowers, in complimentary shades of blue, rests in a traditional softwood
Trug basket. Misty lilac statice falls
gently, like lace, over its edges, and nestled within it are three lilac roses,
two blue trachelium, two blue veronica and three blue larkspur.
Statice, sometimes known as Sea Foam or
Seal Lavender, symbolizes remembrance, and is a common guest in mourning
tributes and at memorial services.
Lavender coloured roses, with their
whispering blue undertones, are unusual. They can symbolize the mysterious and
the unobtainable, enchantment and other-worldliness. Their colour alone,
traditionally represents spiritual rest and is said to aid tranquility.
Similarly, larkspur, with its showy flowers and green, delicate foliage, is
said to represent peace and tranquility.
Almost two centuries ago, a young gardener
named Thomas Smith re-designed the original Anglo-Saxon, boat-like ‘Trog’
basket. Originally used to carry grains, and as measuring implements for liquid,
Thomas’ design was more commonly used for ornamental purposes, or for the
garden. So impressed was Queen Victoria with his design, that she awarded
Thomas a bronze medal, and a diploma of merit! The design you see in this
collection, we owe to him.
